I’m surprised that they had that much variety.

There was a hole in the wall hot dog place in downtown Tulsa. It was run by a bunch of Greeks. The best hot dogs I ever had.
I have read that the ancient Greeks considered Sicilians to be the best chefs. Also olives were there staff of life.

I have a bronze Greek artifact - it appears to be an arrowhead but actually is not, it's a spear point for what my Classics prof told me was a boys' spear. The little guys used to hunt up small game for the family table from a very early age.
So the Greeks gave their kids a breakfast of bread and wine and sent them out into the woods with a spear. We give ours a breakfast of Egg McMuffin and a large sugar water and sit them in front of a Nintendo console. And call it civilization.

It was important for ancient Greeks to eat with company. Their dinners especially were also a way to socialize, and dinner time was closely linked not only to gastronomy but to social manners and activities as well. Every meal was accompanied with wine.
...
That’s the way it was before TV, the Internet, and smartphones.

So how did this Greek diet translate into longevity and the prevention of diseases?
