HA! The thing to remember is that back in 1955 most women didn't work so their whole existence depended on a man. The power differential in that type of relationship is pretty significant. He who makes the money has the power. Actually a lot of that stuff is just common courtesy. Most women are nurturing by nature and treat their husbands well no matter who brings home the bacon. The part about the husband being the big Mahuff is somewhat nauseating. ☺

Slaves on plantations did the work that made the money but they weren’t the ones who controlled how that money was spent and, correspondingly, they weren’t the ones who benefited from that money.
