Republican reeling vs. Manchin in key Senate race
Politico ^ | August 9, 2018

Patrick Morrisey is leaning on the president to turn around his campaign against the incumbent Democrat.

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Republicans can't seem to figure out how to beat Joe Manchin.

On paper, Manchin should be an easy mark in November: an incumbent Democrat in a state where President Donald Trump won two-thirds of the vote in 2016 and remains overwhelmingly popular. Yet Manchin holds a comfortable lead in public and private polling, and interviews with multiple Republican operatives involved in or closely following the race indicate it has slipped out of the top tier of Senate contests.

Republicans are worried that Manchin's opponent, state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, has failed to close the gap since he emerged from a nasty primary in May. Morrisey has been blistered by ads from Democrats but has yet to hit the airwaves himself during the general election, and has less than $900,000 in the bank compared to Manchin's $6.2 million war chest.

Trump moves an election 14 points. All this faint hearted moaning is trolling.

There isn’t a single polling number in this article. Fakenews with no data or quisling Establishemnt Rs giving advice. Realclearpolitcs shows a single poll a month ago. Meaningless, but “insiders” will always talk about unreleased private polls.

Politico garbage

In 2012 - Romney got 62.3% of the vote in West Virginia.

In 2012 - Joe Manchin got 60.6%.

Great point. This is meant to demoralize and deflate. It is easy to see through. There are many anti trump propagandists on this site. They are not Russians . Most are Democrat scialist ,” DAZIS”. But many are bitter rino establishment socialists. We are in a war but Trump is winning it big time.

Manchin is politically finished.

No, so far the GOP is once again tone deaf in its messenging... would be my guess. Just like PA18 and OH12.

If the GOP can’t win the WV senate seat this fall, they have zero shot at holding the house.

The D to his credit realized the wind direction long ago and has mostly jump on board with TRUMP. Of course once re-elected and not having to face voters for 6 years I wouldn’t count on that continuing.

The GOP needs to wake up and learn from 2016... messaging that wins you in the Deep South isn’t going to win you in the upper Midwest...

With all that said, the idea that the D is going to win by double digits, come November is virtually impossible. R should win handily, but that was try in PA18 and oh12 as well...

Of the vulnerable D’s. Joe is probably the highest chance of surviving because he was smart enough to jump on board with tRump early

Republicans need to play the video of Hillary bad-mouthing coal miners. Over and over. Hit Manchin on Second Amendment issues. He will be hard to beat. Sells himself as “conservative, Blue-dog Democrat.” That dog won’t hunt. Not anymore. Virtually extinct.

if GOP adds a few seats in the Senate, TRump might convince him to switch party? Or stay in minority. Past switches to GOP were CO Campbell and Shelby AL.
Is he more reliable than some GOP Sens?

Pre-election polls had this race neck and neck. There was no such swing.

I hope you are right but this is not a certainty. Even after he votes for Kavenaugh he should be retired.

Don’t forget we are talking about an indifferent brainwashed electorate.

You don’t win in the upper Midwest by simply trying to tie the D to Hillary or Pelosi! That’s the point. That dog doesn’t hunt here.. it may fire up your hard core base but it won’t get you those disenfranchised MAGA voters and conservative Democrats who are really republicans but haven’t come to terms with the fact their party abandoned them.

You need to give them a reason to vote FOR you, not simply tell them the other guy is a rubber stamp for X. That didn’t get those voters for 20 years and won’t get them now.

This guy is a sitting senator and a former governor, there is more than enough to give folks a reason to vote for you and not him... highlight what he did in office. The killing of coal, the free trade deals. Etc etc.

My belief is that the electorate has the attention span of a gnat. Trump’s massive achievements happened too early to have a maximum impact of this election unless something dramatic happens. He should have poll numbers in the 60s and 70s. Even if you add 10% to the polls as a margin you only get to 59%.

I understand the polls are bullshit but not so much as to not worry me. Funny that I am getting queasy about this election while I was one of the first here to become a Trumpster and even so confident that I won a bet from my girl friend- a nice bottle of champagne hmmm.

What is the RSCC? If you mean the NRSC, they have been dumping a lot of resources into WV, already on their third ad:

Since this article saying the GOP was abandoning the race and no longer considered it “top tier”, the NRSC has launched 3 ads in the state...that would be a considerable amount of cash to run that many ads in one month.

It makes no sense to me that Morrisey’s fundraising is that low, however.

Pathetic.

The only ad needed is a replay of this scene from the SOTU. Manchin wanted to stand and applaud but he felt Schumer’s tentacles clawing him back into his chair.

The tagline would be, Manchin isn’t your Senator, he represents Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. It’s time WV had a Senator who represents our values, not New York and California values.
