Just that they are cutouts, a means to create distance between the principlas and the sources. Laundering operations.

Fusion GPS is working for the Clinton campaign, but by having Perkins Coie handle the contracting, payment, and all communications, the connection to the Clinton campaign is hidden. Similarly with the press.

Shell companies can exist to perform similar laundering functions, think of "fronts" used by organized crime. On the front, the business is a laundry. And it in fact does a laundry business. But that's not all!! This will seem odd, but I don't see a crime in what Perkins Coie and Fusion GPS did. There is a civil case, defamation, and Buzzfeed is busy defending itself on that front as a consequence of publishing the dossier compiled by Fusion GPS.

What the DOJ and FBI did is so far beyond the pale, that Congress never thought or considered passing a law against it. Incredible abuse of power. Congress did pass a law that gives immunity to illegal spying by the government, as long as the spying includes a court warrant. The public is going to be mighty angry when all this comes out, and we find that the remedy is a shrug and another pointless and toothless law.

We are so far past pitchforks and torches ....
