The company I used to work for had me do an analysis of the tire industry. We had a cut of petroleum that looked like it could replace rubber processing oil.
Good Year bought several tank cars of our stuff, made a bunch of tires and tested them on a cab fleet.
We decided not to follow up because the oil was hot and would burn the skin.
I haven’t seen a dually like yours on the road in many, many years.
I’m guessing that you still can buy used tires. 30 years ago that is what I used to do. I recall one time getting a real nice set of tires off of a Caddy that fit my truck!
Whatever you decide to get, check out www.tirebuyer.com.
Tire Buyer is the retail front end for a national tire wholesaler.
In many areas they deliver by truck to the installer you select, same day no charge. Much cheaper than Discount Tire or Tirerack.
They sell rims too but I’d stick with stock if you want to save $$$.
They were replaced by Hankooks, which I thought were Korean. They're marked, Malaysia. :-/
Pep boys! Cooper tires are American made.
Another thing we learned was that major tire companies make almost nothing on their original equipment tires.
Its the second set that makes it profitable.
16 inch cragars ? Those are hens teeth !
I’ve seen them in 14 primarily, and a few in 15. Never in 16.
Most lift kits on full size trucks are for looks, are not any kind of performance benefit and in fact can foul up the working capabilities of the suspension and break stuff if used stressfully off-road. If looking cool at the mall is not important get some OEM wheels or similar aftermarket and slap them on with OEM size tires or one size larger. A much more stable and durable ride than a mall crawler truck.
Again, I emphasize tirerack for your tire research. And, you cant ever go wrong in the all terrain category by slapping some BFG AT/KO tires on a truck. This remains the benchmark for everyone else to measure against. Some tires may do a bit better at one aspect or another but its all around attributes are hard to better. A highway all season tire is a different category though and a good benchmark for this duty is the Michelin Defender.
I learned the opposite lesson ..
.. It’s all about being tacky. Engine and a just a touch on the body. Less is more.
My shop teacher told me that anyone can make a light car go fast. But few can make a substantial car fast.
Keep the AC, the nice seats, the spare and the interior. Anyone can buy go-fast stuff and most can even put them in right. But to make the overall package is something that few do.
First truck, huh?
No, not in the least. Turns out that after following the advice I received, it is possible to obtain OEM sized rims and tires for $175, a total of $700 ish.
No, not in the least I have owned several other trucks but all were stock and not lifted. Turns out that after following the advice I received, it is possible to obtain OEM sized rims and tires for $175, a total of $700 ish.
Good luck with your truck (and tires).
If you have an aftermarket 4x4 place around, like the one that did the lift, see if they have any “take offs” for sale.
I got a set of OEM upgrade tires and wheels for my Mustang that still had the “whiskers” for less than I could buy just the tires new.
I have been told that if you turn in a leased car, the cheapest upcharge is for tires which the dealers get at cost.
Retail is a scam!
We thought one of the smaller tire makers would entertain our replacement product vs. Exxon’s.
Turned out only Good Year was willing to entertain our processing oil for a test.
I’m 99% sure you will not find any quality tires and wheels for $300. IIRC you have a 6 lug wheel on a 2500.
Contact a Discount Tire Store. I’ve used them for years. Tbey are a Nation wide company, very Customer Friendly, know what they’re doing and good pricing.
If you do find $300 for all 4 corners GET GOOD TRUCK AND DEATH INSURANCE COVERAGE and dont ask Me to ride in it.
Gonna leave it lifted? I’d either put it back to standard config or sell it.....but that’s just me.
What does the GM door tag say they should be? I only put Michelin LTX on my trucks. Best tires I have ever owned and worth every penny. Many sets with well over 40,000 miles on them.
