In Europe it was a thing all the young kids did. Work after high school, live at home, save money, and go on one or more very long trips. They would tell me they just spent 6 months touring my country more than I ever had. I’d be jealous.

I travelled extensively. Some for myself, mostly for work. People say, "Wow! It must be fascinating, I'm so jealous!"

Not so much. Travel becomes monotonous. I remember people; not places I've stayed or things I saw or food that I ate.

For instance, I worked for months in San Francisco. Saw all of the touristy things in the first couple of weeks, ate well, enjoyed myself. For the next 2-3 months, I saw the inside of the hotel and the inside of the office. People in cities are all the same, touristy spots are all the same, good restaurants are all the same. End of the day, I just wanted to go home and eat my wife's cooking in my own kitchen and sit in my own easy chair.

Flip side, I worked in rural Alabama for a month or so. People there were fantastic, I'd go back there for a visit in a heartbeat.
