Death Benefits?

Posted on 07/29/2018 3:35:39 PM PDT by Allen In Texas Hill Country

Next Tuesday will be one week that has passed since we were informed that our grandson was killed in a motorcycle accident. Thats truly unfortunate but its worse than that because of our seven grandchildren he was the one that we adopted at 4 and raised. He was a truck driver that crossed the US 3 or 4 times a month.

Unfortuately he bought a motorcycle last January. At the celebration of life party a neighbor, in his 60s or 70s and still races 'em, said that the first 6 months are the most dangerous. Lastly and most importantly our grandson left behind a 2 year old boy. He and the mother never married and she can barely take care of herself much less the boy.

The point of this entry is not to elicit sympathy (but thanks) but what benefits might be available to the boy from the military? The grandson has a DD214 with a honorable discharge. I ask this because also at the celebration this was suggested.

I'm going to take his DD214 and death certificate to to the local enlistment center and ask there too.

Thanks for any help.

If your grandson was a military veteran, the only thing his family is entitled to is a headstone plaque for his grave.........Contact your local VA office for the full information.

Sorry for your loss.

Very sorry for your loss, Allen. How horrible.

Our son bought a motorcycle when he was 25. He’s always lived a little too dangerously and is not a particularly defensive or attentive driver, so my wife and I were scared to death. He became an EMT, is a volunteer Fire Cadet at a local fire department, and is working on his paramedic degree now. In the past year, he has now seen a fair amount of death up close and personal including Jaws of Life extrications from accidents. He finally decided to sell the bike a couple months ago and my wife and I are ECSTATIC that it is gone. Thank God nothing happened to him.

Your best contact would be either the Veterans Administration, or the local VFW.

It depends upon the availability and locale of Honor Guard Units. My Grandfather, buried in Houston, my Father, buried in Shreveport, and my Son in Law, buried at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery all had Honor Guard Units available.

If the mother of the child is not competent to raise the child, you should look into filing for custody.

Again, thanks all. We have an SS office in town and I’ll drop by the enlistment center.
