The Iranian revolution occurred not because students marched under the banner of the ayatollah, but because the shopkeepers in Tehran joined them in opposing the Shah. Gas stations and supermarkets empty because trucks cannot buy fuel on credit to supply them following even a temporary collapse of the banking system would produce the same result here. People who have never contemplated hunger before will lose confidence in all levels of government, state, local, and federal.
