This kind of story always brings out a few instances of FReeper sadism.

“We” murder 3000 babies every day, in ways just as gruesome as this ... and “we” call it “constitutionally protected privacy and freedom of choice”.

Yes Sir, NM! The goal of the “right to choice” is to numb the public to the idea of killing babies without thought or conscience. The next item on the agenda is killing old people without thought or conscience.
This philosophy is in step with the UN Agenda that considers the growing population of the earth is “unsustainable!” (Man, do I hate that word) We can’t “hope to feed more billions of people with Earth’s limited resources.”
Look for an age to be determined, say age 75 years, to be enough of a life to live and all who reach that age will be euthanized. Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, Rham’s brother, has gone on record with that exact age, what he considers a long enough life.
That happens, and we are in hell, a hell of a battle that I will join.
The death penalty, even when justified, should not be torturous. This kind of fantasizing is morally objectionable, and manifests a corrupt mind.
If you think someone "needs" to suffer hideously, you can leave that to the hereafter. No one on earth is authorized to do such a thing, nor even to desire it.
Sad story? Yes, but disgusting on top of it.

Those pictures that followed in the post show a beast and a precious young boy. We might not be involved in her reckoning but it will come and, I hope, swiftly and brutally.

I agree. Slow-roast all THREE of them over a period of days. And put it on YouTube for future perps to see and consider.
This story is inaccurate— later stories made corrections. The story about the kidnapping is what the alleged perp , Smith, told the police... either because she’s psycho or on drugs and believed the child was hers, or because she’s just a liar.
The real mother is a totally different woman.
Obviously the child ended up in Smith’s hands in some way, but no report has explained how ...at least not so far. She may have snatched him out of the real family’s yard or house and ran directly to where she killed him, or took him to her house first.
Maybe he was sleeping in his room and his real family was out front and this woman came in through the back door. No way to know until the real family is interviewed.
She probably clammed up when her crazy kidnapping story didn’t fly. The two men may or may not have been real- I suspect they are just figments of her imagination/hallucinations. Pepper spray was also probably her imagination.
Sad and horrible.
