Born and raised with cats and dogs. They always got along well and had each others back.
We always had to take the dogs on trips. The cats? Leave in the basement with food, water and litter boxes. We did have some cats that went camping with us.

I experienced a similar earthquake in Japan -- except I was considerably closer to the epicenter (much shorter P-S time and more directly vertical P-motion).
At the time, I was standing on a concrete floor -- and the P wave slapped the soles of my feet as if someone had hit them with a sledgehammer.
My work partner barely had time to say, "Earthquake!!" when the S (shear) wave hit and things started swaying from side to side.
Yep, it was the P (compressive) wave that woke the cats; the earthquake was just farther away... And, the S-waves really rattled their cages...

“I was in my room and they came in creeping and close to the ground.”
Not sure why but LOL at that imagery! :) The one time that I know of us having a quake around these parts was a rare night that I wasn’t sleeping at home, so I wouldn’t know how they reacted.

I love them both equally and for different reasons. But with our lifestyle we could only have cats at the moment and probably until at least one of us retires.

If you were laying down on the floor and resting and felt a shockwave/tremor you’d probably react too.
The cats in this video are startled only moments before the major movement from the earthquake.
Some of the cats may have only been startled by the cats that initially experienced it.
Need a controlled experiment with isolated cats.

"...the smaller P wave that travels the fastest from the earthquake source and arrives before the larger S wave...."This has been conventional knowledge for a long time. I studied it in school.
There is no mystery involved.
You want mystery? I have it: The dog that senses its master approaching, from miles away, and waits at the door, even when the pattern is disrupted.
Now that is a mystery.

“Moments before the café started to shake, the cats seem to react to a loud noise or a thump.”
Moments before the humans in the café noticed it starting to shake, the cats seem to react to a loud noise or a thump.
Fixed it.
How is it that the earthquake only started once the humans noticed it?
Maybe it actually started when the CATS noticed it.
NOT mysterious.

I think Sheldrake has also done some podcast interviews/talks on this that you can find online.

“Sorry to be a party pooper, but the cats are clearly reacting to a sound that can be heard on the video before the earthquake hits.”
My sound doesn’t work, but that seems to be an awful lot of frantic activity unless the sound was a can opener.
