Don’t know about the backstroke - they say to swim parallel to the shore.....and not to panic....easier said than done.

You can't swim against it but you can swim sideways in the current. I watched an old guy swim through a rip current everyday in South Florida. He would swim parallel to the beach and pass right through it. I'm sure living on that beach helped him avoid problems.
