Powells Point, N.C. — Beach-goers in the Outer Banks got a powerful reminder of the dangers of the ocean after a man drowned Thursday.

According to police, the drowning victim, Kenny Ray Gooch, 32, was from Powells Point and sacrificed himself to save his girlfriend’s son.

“We heard screams of help in the water and we looked out and there were multiple people in the water, somewhat scattered,” one witness said.

Southern Shores police said three teenage boys were swimming north of the Kitty Hawk Pier at about 8 p.m. Thursday when they got pulled too far out.

Gooch jumped in to save them. They made it out of the water, but he did not.

The article doesn’t state whether or not there were lifeguards.

Having a cell phone, knowing the name of the closest road and it’s mile marker is a good idea before going in the water.

I would not advise taking a cell phone into the water.

OH - are the rip currents bad there? (You did see the other thread about the 3 deaths in 1 day along the N. Carolina Coast = including, I believe, 1 at Sunset Beach.) Be careful out there.

Yes there are rip currents and the NWS had issued a beach warning about strong north south currents which could easily push you into a rip current. so yes.
