She isnt poor, black or Latino, or being pushed out of an affordable inner-city neighborhood turned cool by mostly white hipsters with their expensive juice bars, galleries, and heavier wallets made out of recycled ocean plastic and organic fibers.
In fact, Shaheen is white and grew up lounging on one of the most exclusive private beaches in South Florida. The town where she has lived for 70 years prohibits juice bars or any other commercial enterprise. And her familys waterfront property is currently worth $3.6 million, give or take.
Still, Shaheen and some other long-term residents of Golden Beach say they arent welcome in the small city anymore. Some left when they couldnt afford their homes, others when their neighbors, and Golden Beach lost its small town feel. Still others, like Shaheen, decided to stay despite the changes. But that hasnt been easy.
Shaheen says shes the victim of a decades-long effort by city officials to use bogus code violations to push her out of her waterfront home to make way for something bigger, newer and a lot more expensive.
I guess they just didnt want older homes or older residents, said Shaheen, who is now in her 70s and whose family has lived in Golden Beach since 1944. I dont fit the vision of Golden Beach.
Today, Golden Beach is one of the most affluent municipalities in South Florida. Made up entirely of single-family residences, the town has some of the highest home values in Miami-Dade. (Its second only to Indian Creek, one of the wealthiest enclaves in the entire nation.)

How zoning laws and resulting code enforcement actions are used to enrich city coffers. Not just by fines levied but by requiring larger homes.
Nothing about Boca Raton?
Forgive me if I don’t cry too much for her and the others...
I’ve been pushed out of Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, NJ, South Miami Beach, parts of Manhattan and Cobble Hill, Brooklyn and am now relocating to the Deep South. I suspect I’ll be pushed out of there, eventually. I never put my suitcases in the closet.
My rich uncle I Florida, a banker, has an elevator for his cars in his house.
Were you pushed out by gentrification? What happened?
In case of floods???? Hurricanes???
So they want to push her out in favor of rich foreigners who will doze the place?
It looks like a cute little place.
Kind of a shame all around.
I got pushed out by divorcification....
Boca is a cracker box town compared to the old Fl represented in G Bch and Bal Harbor Broad Causeway area
Its not “the rich” pushing her out
Its grasping, rapacious government that is trying to maximize its take.

So you have no problem with the local government trying to force you out of the home you have lived in for the past 50+ years?..............I don't get it bro! What are you doing on this site?
It is monetary boon for the counties because they don't have to go to the voters to increase taxes, thereby revenues. It is a money grab.
But the main problem is this. These interlopers are leaving the 'shitholes' they created and bringing the same ideas with them that created those 'shitholes'.
It is only a matter of time until they turn their new cities and town into 'shitholes' as well.
I hadn’t read all through the post...My fault....
I jumped way too soon....I know better....
I was just going on where it said her property was worth 3.6 million....
This is true everywhere, is it not?
Except for areas in which real estate is stagnant.
Funny. I see areas ALL over Los Angeles trying to fight gentrification. The ONLY way they can do it is by preventing the sale of real estate to willing buyers.
The government is not involved.
