The only times I refer to Prairie Dogs by that name is when speaking/writing to Out-of-Staters.
The very nicest thing I and most of my neighbors call them is "[BLEEP]ing Pasture Rats".
I can say that I have never seen even a crow or raven dining on Pasture Rat road kill. I suppose bugs finally eat 'em because of all the disease the critters carry. (Plague is supposed to kill more than snakes and humans combined IIRC.)
