At least 1,000 people gathered at the grandiose tomb of the late Spanish dictator Francisco Franco on Sunday to protest against Madrid’s plans to move his body, an AFP photographer said.
Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939 to 1975 when he died, is buried in a valley just outside Madrid in an imposing basilica carved into a mountain face with a 150-meter (490-feet) cross towering over it. Known as the Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen), it is a deeply divisive symbol of a past that Spain still finds difficult to digest.

Communist governments almost always must be overthrown. The ideology does not permit a peaceful transition, because such an acknowledgement would mean it is flawed and wrong-headed.

Chevy Chase’s career is dead.
His mistake was not pushing for a “Vacation” tv series when it would’ve been a hit. That talk show in 1993 killed his career, it was all B-movies and crap ever since.
What did he save Spain from?
Like Ireland’s De Valera, he was “unofficially” allied with Adolf. He was bought out of WWII, essentially. And he kept supplying materials such as tungsten to Germany. He allowed the Abwehr to operate in Spain and Morocco. Centralism was the order of the day at government level.

He saved Spain from becoming a Soviet state and yet another beachhead for that terror and insanity. He was certainly nowhere on par with Hitler, nor did he engage in those Nazi atrocities. Conversely, FDR openly chose to align us with Joseph Stalin, who made Hitler look like a choir boy, and gave the Soviets entrée into infesting our nation and institutions with their Communism like a malignant cancer, which has never abated to this day.
That’s like arguing that Adolf would save Poland from becoming a Soviet state by his military presence there. Red herring, and false comparison with FDR, not to mention the USSR did not of course declare war on the USA whereas Nazi Germany did. Patton, BTW, wanted to deal with the USSR once the war was over; it is a pity that more US leaders at the time did not think as he did.
I do not regard Eamon de Valera as saving Ireland from becoming “Soviet” either by his stance. And was there even a danger of Spain joining the Soviet bloc or being conquered by it? Let’s have fewer false equivalencies.
He was smart enough not to ever join the Axis. Yes the abwehr operates in Spain. You realize Wilhelm Canaria anti Nazi and told Franco not to make a deal with Hitler right? Given a choice between Franco or the Commies, I’ll take Franco every time.
I do not consider it a false comparison. FDR willing chose to align us with a monster even more evil than Hitler. That gave the Soviets full advantage for decades to infiltrate our nation from top to bottom, into the government, into Hollywood, into our education system. We never fully rooted out that evil, and the Deep State can be traced to that infiltration.
While you criticize Franco, what was the alternative for Spain ? They had two choices in the 1930s. Him or the Communist “Republicans” pledged to stamping out Catholicism en masse.
Yes, Patton knew who the real evil was, and that’s why he was murdered. He’d have been the man to root out and stop the Soviet menace, both abroad and domestically, as he was likely to be the next President in 1948.
Realize if the Republicans won in Spain, Hitler most likely invades, and Jews would have lost one of the last safe havens in Europe.

No, it was not his only option. Franco could have reached out to the Allied powers if he really was a pro-freedom leader.
