Defense, at 3.5% of GDP, is roughly 1/10 of non-defense government (federal, state and local) spending. There is likely to be some fraud, waste and abuse in defense expenditures, but I’d say it’s probably trivial compared to what exists in civilian government spending. Think about the 100% waste that comprises affirmative action and electric car subsidies alone.
