I knew someone who opened a video rental store back in the day of beta and vhs. Went gangbusters for a couple of years, then the big boys got into the game and he closed.

Red box and Streaming.

Pity. The thing is if you want 4K and 7.1 surround or better you need physical media. 4K stream is heavily compressed and you reliable constant fast connection with a high data cap and the pic quality is about that of a boy ray disc with inferior audio for those who care.

I get pretty nostalgic when I go past the old blockbuster. It reminds me of the trips there with my kids to pick out movies and what it was like before the kids became butthead teenagers.

My boy always wanted the scary blood and gore movies and my girl? Depended on her mood of course.

Our old Blockbuster is now a Subway. People always have to eat, so we expect that store to stay.

It’s not entirely clear whether the Ford “Active” is going to be a hatchback car or a mini SUV.

But for anyone who wants a Chinese made car with a powerful 3 cylinder engine, it belongs on their list to consider. For folks who loved the GM Geo Metro, as well. (Of course, it’s smaller than the old 3 cylinder motor that Triumph put on some motorcycles).

I remember returning a vcr tape that I hadn’t rewound 100%. Im telling you it was 98% rewound. They said I owed a $2.00 rewind fee. I told them to cram it. They were closed within 6 months.

First time I heard of Netflix, I said to myself, this is going to eventually destroy rentals.

I was born in 85 and remember the explosion of video stores. In my small town of 3,000 we had a bunch. Gas stations, grocery stores, liquor stores and pharmacies all had a small section of movies and video games to rent. This was in addition to the stand alone independent stores. Being from a family that didn’t travel or dine out, our fun was renting movies and video games on Friday night. If you were lucky one of the stores also did VCR repair and cleaning.

There was always the small store in town that had the curtain only adults could go behind, and one store would always have the Faces of Death movies that became legendary on playgrounds around the country.

The Onion did a parody article years ago about Blockbuster setting up stores on other planets. Funny how things can change. We also had a two-term communist muslim president in those years.

I miss them too sometimes. Cheaper, got you out of the house, and the stores had much better selection. Don’t miss not being able to rent a movie because someone else had it out, but it made you try ones you might not have seen otherwise.

Yup I remember 99 cent rentals at the Pathmark! It was a nice little Friday night adventure with the family. Good times. Picked up the pizza afterwards.
