BELTON, Texas (KWTX) Investigators have identified three teenagers who were involved in flinging a cat into Lake Belton after a short video of the incident went viral on social media.
The video, which first appeared on Snapchat, was posted on Twitter Monday night by a user who tagged both Belton police and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Belton police identified the three teens involved in the incident and then referred the case to the Bell County Sheriffs Department for further investigation, sheriffs Maj. T.J. Cruz said Wednesday.
The case has been assigned to an investigator with the sheriffs department, who will review the case starting today and will be interviewing parties involved in this incident, Cruz said.
When the investigation is completed the appropriate referrals to juvenile authorities will be made, he said.
No names were released.
The video doesnt show what happened after the cat landed in the water.
"Did it knock the breath out of it? Did it have a hard time, did it drown because it couldn't breathe? You don't know those things, Don Bland, the executive director of the Waco Humane Society, said Tuesday.
So there are so many things on their own, so many different levels that are disturbing for the animal but then it's really hard wrenching to see young kids that are that cruel, he said.
These actions are not OK and will not be tolerated, the individual who posted the video on Twitter told KWTX.

Thank you.
Likely future mass murderers. Deal with them now so they aren’t a threat in the future.
But it will all depend on whether they are from connected families (swept under the rug) or not (prosecuted).
My neighbor's dad used to trap feral cats in a cage and chuck the cage into a large trashcan full of water. Later in the day, he'd hoist up the cage and toss the dead cat into the dumpster. And no, he wasn't a serial killer.
Feral cats are a nuisance. There's a lot where I live. Military service members get house cats and then ditch them when they leave for deployment or have to relocate. Damn things are everywhere.
So which is it? Do people who kill cats become serial killers or not?
I'm inclined to believe that while most serial killers started off killing small animals, most people who kill small animals do not become serial killers.
I didn’t read the whole article. It sounds like the cat died. Not sure why/how though.
If it’s just throwing a stray cat in the water...sure it’s not nice but come on it’s a stray cat. Would you be upset if I took a goldfish and put it in a net and took out of the water for 30 seconds and watch it flop back into the water?
Cats can swim. But like a dirty kid not wanting to go to bed...they may not like getting in the water.
Now if they beat the cat or tortured it and that led to it dying then yes that would warrant an investigation.
hmmm...what about burning ants with a magnifying glass?
What about stepping on a spider?
At what point does an animal not become an animal?
Putting a cat in water to watch it swim is less cruel than burning insects for the fun of it.
For punishment, they each need to give a cat a bath by themselves (no gloves or long sleeves allowed).
These people were not worried about feral cats. Any cat would do to a few psychos.
Texas also has pretty strong property rights. If your cat is climbing on my car at night I have the right to protect my property ;-)
Heartless idiot.
funny. Maybe that will be their defense. They were trying to clean it up a bit.
Thank you. Apparently many around here think cruelty to an animal is no big deal.
Ok. I watched the video. He threw that cat in the water. More than just watching it try to swim. That does go into the cruel Category of things. How cruel? Not sure but it doesn’t really look “ok”.
But it’s also not the same thing as setting the cat on fire and then throwing it in the lake.
I think the issue is the article is poorly written and most haven’t watched the video. After watching the video it’s a bit worse than I thought, but not as bad as some here think either.
Ask them if they watched the video and still feel that way.

Tell that to the Texas veterinarian who shot a feral cat with a bow.
Except the cat turned out not to be feral and was named Tiger.
Kinda funny how people are so incensed by cruel treatment of animals that they are triggered to commit cruel treatment of their own.
Sounds like an ill-thought out prank.
Yep, there is no context for this short video. Maybe the cat likes it. Or, maybe the cat went berserk and scratched the hell out of his girl friend. All I know is that the cat landed on his feet.
I remember stunning honeybees with a swatter and then putting them in the still hot bar-b-que coals a couple of times - didn’t like them because they were everywhere and I got stung a lot stepping on clover patches in the yard.
Now I love bees, but hardly see any. We don’t mow the clover or dandelions and want to have a hive in the backyard.
Sorry about the ones I charcoal grilled...
My adorable little rescue cat Zizu is lounging near my feet right now. She likes to be near me wherever I am. She came from a feral colony until picked up off the streets of NJ by a rescue group. She came to me with ear mites, conjunctivitis, worms, bones showing, thin sparse fur---and a few vet visits and months later, she could grace the cover of any cat magazine. I saw that she was, underneath all those initial problems, a real beauty and a total sweetie, and I was right. Wouldn't take a million for this little girl. She is gorgeous, scary smart, and extremely affectionate--the total package.
Oh, they will be there... Yes, they will be there...
