The Nationals are panicking (Baseball)
New York Post ^ | July 6, 2018 | Mollie Walker

It’s not just the Mets who entered the NL East with high hopes and have fallen flat.

It’s July 5, and Washington has a losing record. The 42-43 Nationals are scrambling to collect themselves.

After getting swept for the third time since the start of June and dropping their season-high fifth straight game Wednesday, the Nationals held a players-only meeting after a 3-0 loss to the Red Sox.

According to the Washington Post’s account, Max Scherzer was the leader of the meeting, which wasn’t officially called by one person, as veterans made sure the younger players stuck around.

I’m in the DC area. I don’t sense panic. Concern, but not panic.

Scherzer has credibility .He’s one of the best pitchers in the game right now. His nickname is blue eye...because he has one blue eye (the other is brown)

Who the heck holds a players only meeting when the ace doesn’t pitch after it?! I guess it was getting pretty desperate.

Ha ha it has worked out so far. Last night’s game was a baseball gods win. Tonight’s game was a lucky baseball thing, not a fundamental baseball win. This team needs to win with fundamental baseball. Trea should be an all-star.

Without Strasburg, their starting pitching isn’t very good.

Rumor here in Cincinnati is that the Nats are trying to deal for Iglesias and Matt Harvey.

True.

I think if the Nats’ lose in the playoffs in 2018, they’ll fire Dave Martinez and bring in Joe Girardi.

That’s true, but I’m not sure anything changes if they would have had Stras during the shut-out and near shut out stretch of games. That was a mental thing or something. It might not be over, either.

They are going to have to go on a run to make the playoffs at this point. Which is completely within the realm of possibility. What happens if the don’t make it at all?

Panic? Too late for that.

Exhibit A: They SUCK.

Exhibit B: Their best player is having his worst season (positive spin: Harper is quietly playing through an injury that’s hobbling him.. negative spin: He’s just not hitting and no one - including himself - knows why ... REALLY negative spin: something else is going with him that’s affecting his swing ...) Either way, he can forget about that mythical $300M contract after this season ....

...I’ve spent 5 years dreaming of him patrolling CF at Yankee Stadium ... now I think they should definitely take a pass on him ... hurts to say, cause I like the guy ...

...BTW, when Schrezer went to the Nats, some wrote about tehir being “shoo-ins” for the next World Series ...

... my take was the following: “Max, get ready to win ERA titles... while going 13-12 in the won lost record (because THAT is the team that you just signed up for. THAT is WHAT THEY DO.).”

Look I’d like the “Nats” a lot better if they’d ditch that made-up name and call themselves The SENATORS, a name that has DC history (and 1 World Series Title) attached to it ...

... OK, I’m out.

Oh - and GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!

I was only off by ONE win regarding Scherzer’s first season with the Nats.

He went from being 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA in Detroit in 2014, to going 14-12 with a 2.79 ERA in Washington in 2015. He’s improved his W-L pct. since then as the team got better - til this season when they are spinning their wheels again.

Hope that contract was worth it Max. Cause you ain’t gonna get your ring in DC.

You’re right - they should call themselves the Washington Senators. Absolutely.

Oh...

And go Red Sox!!!

Dude, the Caps won the Stanley Cup, it’s a great year for DC area sport! (My son-in-law and grandsons in sports fan training are down there!)

I just thought I'd put this on this baseball thread...... so I apologize in advance if it's not on topic ....... except for it's about the great game of baseball.

************

I’m a 72 year old baseball guy. I’m watching my Pirates who are one of the worst teams in the majors, and certainly the STUPIDEST. They have had 17 runs scored against them twice in the last four games. HEROIC! Almost like football scores. lol

Nevertheless, I’ve been laboring through watching the game today and here comes the SWEET PART, THE VERY SWEET PART.

Ready? Okay.

Steve Blass (1971 World Series game #7 complete game winning pitcher against the Baltimore Orioles), now doing color on Pirate games, ….today commenting on a broken/shattered bat swing early in this game -— 7/7/18.

HERE COMES!!!!!!

Steve’s comment:

"I LOVE THAT SOUND OF A BROKEN BAT. I LIKE IT SO MUCH ..... I MADE IT MY RING TONE ON MY CELL PHONE".

LMAO

I take care of an executive rental house that caters to pro ball players.
(Rangers, Mavericks, Cowboys)
They are often part of the team for only a year and don’t sell a home somewhere else.
A couple years ago Ian Desmond turned down a bunch of money and left the nationals to play for the Rangers for a year. He told me he absolutely hated playing for the Nationals. The management completely sucked, the city sucked, and most of the team sucked.
But ESPECIALLY management sucked. He was a meek mild kind guy but really hated the Nationals Management.

Ha. The funniest part about broken bats is if the ballpark is really rocking with noise a power hitter puts this tremendous swing on the ball and the outfielder is still going back when it bloops in.

_______________

LOL .... that's true.

I also get a kick out of a completely broken bat .... like when the barrel of the bat AND the ball are heading toward the shortstop at the same time.

LOL

Maybe I can get why management sucked but saying that the city sucked? That’s a bit extreme. Nats draw well, tend to be in top 10 in the league the past couple of years.
