WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. A white man who challenged a black family's use of a private community's pool has not only resigned from the homeowner's association board he's also lost his job.
Sonoco announced Friday that Adam Bloom is no longer employed by the packaging and industrial products company, saying it doesn't condone discrimination of any kind, even if it happens outside its workplace.

Whether people have respect for their elected (or unpaid volunteer) officials is irrelevant. What they should have respect for is the RULES.
There isn't enough information in the story to make a determination about Mr. Bloom's character OR Ms. Edwards' character. Going on what is seen in the video, I agree with what others have said...Mr. Bloom remained calm, cool, and polite in the face of Ms. Edwards accusations and threats of legal action against him when she asked the police what action she could take about racial profiling. HE has just as much right to claim slander for her (as yet) unfounded accusation of racism on his part AND posting it all over social media. The pendulum swings in both directions.
In addition to the possible slander, she made a number of unsubstantiated statements, such as, "you didn't ask anyone else....." Was she there for his entire shift? Observing his actions and listening to his interactions with other people?
Her correct approach would be to have gone to the HOA/Pool management and complain. If I don't like a snotty-attitude store employee, I take it up with the store manager, not the employee. What lesson is she teaching her son with her public behavior?
And for the record....I'm pretty familiar with NC Labor laws. I live less than a half an hour from where this incident took place. Agree that they can fire at will, just as he can claim wrongful dismissal. IF there are other aspects of his job performance that are lacking, and they were looking for an excuse, point given. BUT if he was a good employee who was performing his job well, he absolutely has a case for wrongful dismissal.
Perhaps you need to find another pot to stir. I'm not taking your bait. Have a lovely evening!
Well said. I hope he pursues that.
She was at a place she had a right to be and Chairman Bloom asked to see her state issued identification.
Unless the state of North Carolina has a provision in its laws that require people to show their state issued identification to a duly elected HOA Pool Chairman, she has no obligation to present her identification.
However, I understand that some people would prefer to live in a society where random private citizens can walk up to you demand to see your identification documents.
The video shows her handing A key card to Mr. Bloom. What proof do you (or did Mr. Bloom) have that its hers? These things get lost, or borrowed, or improperly loaned.
You should be careful claiming as fact that which is actually opinion.
” What they should have respect for is the RULES.”
What Rules did she violate?
Do you live in this community? Or routinely write by-laws for HOA's? If not, your opinion on what the by-laws might or might not have said is just that: OPINION.
“The video shows her handing A key card to Mr. Bloom. What proof do you (or did Mr. Bloom) have that its hers? These things get lost, or borrowed, or improperly loaned.

The HOA stated that she was a member of the (HOA) community.
Being that she was a member of the HOA and had a key card, she had the right to be there.
And I don’t think NC requires one to present their state issued ID to a Pool Chairman.
I'm confused. When you ask someone you do not recognize for their ID to see if they are a resident, is that right wing or left wing?
What are you basing this on?
You DO know the definition of assume, do you not?
What is it about her membership in the HOA that leads you to believe she does not have the right to be in the pool area?
Social media mob lynches man.
The HOA has confirmed that she is a member of the community.
I am basing my opinion on that documentation.
You assume that she is an HOA member. What are you basing this assumption on? There is no information given anywhere in the video or subsequent article that validates that.
By state law, is one required to present their state issued ID to an official of an HOA?
Sure, but he should be able to collect unemployment insurance. That will cause their rates to go up. It also may deter potential employees from applying to work there, knowing that the company is biased and may jump to unwarranted conclusions. Not saying that the guy was totally innocent but....
By checking ID when people unknown to the pool chairman they come to the pool?
This is what I am thinking. Unless i've read something wrongly, this man's actions are quite defensible regarding his position as head chairman of the Glenridge community's private pool.
This looks like a false accusation of racism by a thin skinned person who was looking for anything that could be loosely interpreted as racism.
