Rooftop solar charges batteries. Batteries are still very short lived. 2-4 years if you are lucky. Why do I want dc lights and such to live my life by?
I don’t see solar powering my 12 ton ac unit during the summer. So twist off greenies. I want nuclear powered electricity. Works during the day, works at night, storms or wind or freezing cold. Batteries and wind powered bird choppers can’t claim that!!

12 ton? 144,000 cooling BTUs is a lot. We have a large home and get by with 3.5 tons. We cool 3500 square feet to a comfy 66. Granted, we live in western PA and don't have the cooling loads of the Mojave Desert.

Heating is 85,000 btus. We do drop significantly below zero in winter and have a backup for the greenhouse. The backup is more for zone heating and probably could get by with the existing furnace.

There are recent options in cooling. Just for your reference and spot cooling: Solar AC.

What is your SEER rating on that 12 ton big boy?

“Batteries are still very short lived. 2-4 years if you are lucky.”

My solar batteries routinely last 10 years; have babied several out to 13 but capacity was rapidly diminishing at the end.
