I used to love the guests on his show who would talk about their war experience. They reminded me of my dad.
One of my favorites was George Gobel talking about how he spent the war in Oklahoma for the Army Air Corps as a flight instructor (AT9’s)
With a dead pan face - “We did a great job. Did you ever hear of one air attack on Oklahoma??”
Their generation are missed.

Very lucky adult life (mostly).
Carson presented an image that Americans thought of as "normal." He reminded his audience that the country had a broadly shared way of looking at things, an apolitical center.
He has not been replaced.
