LeBron James Joining Los Angeles Lakers on 4-Year $154 Million Deal
New York Times ^ | 07/01/2018 | By Marc Stein and Scott Cacciola

The biggest name in basketball is headed to Hollywood.

Through a short news release issued by his agents at Klutch Sports, LeBron James announced at 8:05 p.m. Sunday night that he would join the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency and sign a four-year, $154 million contract.

In what has become an every-four-years ritual for the three-time N.B.A. champion, James has chosen to switch teams for the third time in his career, opting to leave his home-state Cleveland Cavaliers for a second time and join one of the league’s glamour franchises.

James took to Instagram to say goodbye to Cavaliers fans, posting a picture of Cleveland’s championship parade in 2016 with the caption: “Thank you Northeast Ohio for an incredible 4 seasons. This will always be home.”

The deal includes a player option that will enable James to return to free agency after the third season of his new contract. James does not plan to hold a news conference to elaborate on the decision until later in the off-season, according to a person with knowledge of his plans who was not authorized to discuss them publicly.

After four seasons, four trips to the N.B.A. finals and one unforgettable title run in 2016 with the Cavaliers — in a city that had gone 52 years without tasting championship glory — James will play in the Western Conference for the first time. A native of Akron, Ohio, James began his professional career when Cleveland made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft.

His new team, the Lakers, have missed the playoffs for a franchise-record five consecutive seasons and failed in their attempts to lure the All-Star free agent Paul George away from the Oklahoma City Thunder this off-season.

Didn't even know such a thing existed. Roster is mostly a group of D league players who didn't quite make an NBA team. Coached by Jeff Van Gundy.

You mean like Stephan Curry’s 90% career free throw shooting average? Or LeBron’s 50% career field goal percentage? Or Russell Westbrook’s 2.04 career assist to TO average?

Yeah, they suck.

For only having two hoops fans you sure seem to be picking up the slack.

Yeah, you’re the American who roots for US teams to lose. I forgot.
.......................................................

I was thrilled that the homosexual agenda comes first US soccer team didn’t make the World Cup. And I’m as big a fan as you’ll find.

I would guess that basketball players are even worse because in addition to being pro LBGTQ ,they are against Trump and everything America stands for (Lebron and Curry both said their teams wouldn’t go to the White House if invited.)

Just because a team has the letters US in front of their name doesn’t mean the REPRESENT the United States.

Lakers still have cap room for another superstar. They will or can have even more after next year. They may not be building a contender for next year but two years down the road.

Lavar Ball's son, you know, the "next Jordan, but better"... is the worst starting point guard in the NBA in several key metrics:

Lonzo Ball played the 6th most min/gm at PG, meaning that he was being given plenty of chances to improve, but....

He was THE worst free throw shooter in the entire NBA among all starters... 45.1% (Shaq's lifetime FT% was 52.7%, and was 59.2% for his rookie season)
At 30.1%, he was in the bottom 5 among starting Point Guards in 3-pt %.
He was 2nd worst all-time in NBA history in rookie FG% after their first 12 games.
His 10.2 PPG was #50 among Point Guards... and there are only 32 starting Point Guards in the NBA.
He also missed 30 games due to injury (as a rookie).

Defending America hating athletes and slandering the US military by a blanket statement of US troops raping innocent women. Only the mindset of a friggin’ ahole would go where you just did in a hideous attempt to make a point.

You are correct....this is probably forty-percent more than he ought to make. Maybe they can go with a very young team....draftees mostly, and just build a long-term team out of this with LeBron there mostly to tutor and teach.

I will say this....no other team in the NBA would have offered a four-year deal for this much money.

I *think* Lakers represented Minnesota (Land of Lakes) before Los Angeles. We are the city of Angels and have a baseball team named as such nearby...Don’t know what “Clippers” comes from...

Really? Why go there with those comments.

Every US serviceman, every diplomat, anyone in any like position represents this country. When they break the law or act like fools they don’t represent us very well, now do they?

I know of no “America hating athletes” representing out flag. Point them out to me. There are many who are spoiled, think foolishly, and are perhaps not that bright. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn’t make them haters of this country. That’s lefty stuff to go there without rock solid proof of such as statement.

As for your vile and pathetic comments about me, they are more a reflection on yourself than they are on your target. I thought people here were better than that. Sadly, some belong on DU.

It will be interesting to see how long his body holds up.

LeBron will be 34 years old just after Christmas.

Also, 2018-19 will be his 16th NBA season.

I have never liked the guy, but he might be the greatest basketball player of all time.

Oh hum...I haven’t watched the NBA since the days of Bird/Johnson. When you see players trying to dunk a ball, and miss it, free shooting missing basketball (in high school my coach had us practice free throws - I think I shot 90% at the foul line) and thuggery, it isn’t worth the time.
