Child marriage around the world MEXICO

Nearly one in four girls in Mexico (23%) marry before their 18th birthday. Mexico has the 8th highest number of child brides in the world.

In Mexico, child marriage often takes the form of informal unions. According to INSAD (2017), four in every five unions nationwide are informal.

DRIVERS Child marriage in Mexico is largely driven by poverty, tradition and patriarchal gender norms. It is most common in rural areas, particularly among indigenous groups where social practices and customary laws prevail over state legislation.

92% of girls in informal unions in Mexico are out of school. Lack of education or employment can push girls to view marriage as a path towards independence and financial stability. Others see marriage as an opportunity to flee violence in their family homes.

Teenage pregnancy is linked to child marriage in Mexico – over half of adolescent girls (aged 12-17) who are married have at least one child.

Gender norms around marriage and girls’ sexuality also play a significant role. On one hand, the sexualisation of girls encourages men to look for younger partners. On the other hand, marriage is still seen by many women and girls as a way to gain respect and status in their communities.

LEGAL AGE The General Law on the Rights of Children and Adolescents 2014 establishes 18 years as the minimum age of marriage, but girls can marry at 14 and boys can marry at 16 with parental consent.

However, the age of marriage varies at the state level. As of May 2017, 22 states have made married before 18 illegal while another ten allow child marriage.

I just saw an article that claimed that the age of consent in Mexico was just lowered to 12.

Are you sure about that link?

I get a rather cagey looking forum, with a note that the article may not be worthy of believing.

Is that a true source?

“I just saw an article that claimed that the age of consent in Mexico was just lowered to 12.”

Too little info can land you in jail in Mexico.

I have a bit of an issue with “child,”’ while they are not adults usually they are minors, certainly - child sounds like a ten year old.

It is not necessarily evil for a teen to marry. Throughout history we’ll find many of our ancestors were married quite young. We need to safeguard against exploitation but many married earlier than 18 and I’d say most were not being exploited or being the object of some sort of perversion.

“Child bride “ imo would be someone younger, pre or newly adolescent, immature.

There was a car wreck near here several years back in which the husband of a Mexican woman was killed. The husband was THIRTEEN YEARS OLD. Don’t know if he was legally here or not.

They are referring to an article on a site that could be wrong. The link to the actual article is at the top of the page. So many people on reddit were acting like it was real that I assumed that it was. But it could be fake. I would look for other confirmations.

Ten years ago I hired a housekeeper who was originally from Mexico. When she was 12 she was “carried off” by the 31 year old son of the town's wealthiest family and married to him. Her father had died years before leaving the family of 7 children in extreme poverty. Her mother was paid a bride price for her. She was 13 when her first child was born and 14 when the second one was born. Her husband died in a motorcycle wreck when she was 15. Right after the funeral her in-laws threw her out on the street with just the clothes she was wearing and took her children away from her. She immigrated to the US legally through an older brother who had come years before. She reconnected with her children 20 years later in Texas. Sadly, her in-laws had brought the children illegally since they did not have legal custody. One of her kids married an American and stayed. The other was deported after committing some crime.

Ok. Although when I went looking I found out that it already was 12 in some places in Mexico.
