Hate to defend nbc but I think the root of the sentence is “service was interrupted”

But it’s been 45 years since I studied grammar and didn’t really grasp it all then.

Or “interruption was cause”. Is probably more close.

Sorry, you’re wrong; they’re right.

The sentence reads: “...the hours-long interruption of its internet, video and voice services, was caused two separate...”

The subject (”interruption”) is singular, so the verb (”was”) must also be singular.
