Good VFR numbers, still didn't have his instrument card despite the fact that it wasn't a case of $$, appears to me he wasn't as serious about flying as he should have been. All the good times even during your last flight don't mean jack when you screw up something that is terminal that you likely wouldn't have with the right discipline. Flight from land to water to land to water is a recipe for vertigo. Vertigo progresses to stall and spin if not checked. Then you are dead, and you haven't even hit the water yet.

While I wouldn’t put anything past the Deep State, the articles I’ve read make it seem more likely that he got in over his abilities on the flight.
The article I linked to seemed to have a more detailed take on the black box info (turn to the left, turn to the right, nose up, power spiral down) than the Wikipedia article I first looked at. And, I remember reading long ago from other reputable sources (like the “Enquirer”, LOL) that there was some tension in the family, which may have affected the decision to travel.
New to me facts in the article were the very recent cast removal, and the presence of prescription drugs which might have taken the edge off of JFK Jr’s vigilance and reactions at the end of the flight. At 200 MPH, its only 10 seconds to the water if you go into a dive.
