El Al Is Moving Women Passengers to Accommodate Men… Again
The Points Guy ^ | 06/26/18 | Jessica Puckett

The national flag carrier for Israel, El Al, is in hot water again for moving women passengers on a flight to accommodate ultra-orthodox Jewish men.

El Al flouted a 2017 court ruling that, on the grounds of discrimination against women, bans the practice of moving female passengers for the Jewish men who refuse to sit next to them because of their beliefs.

A witness, Khen Rotem, posted on Facebook that El Al flight 2 departing New York (JFK) for Tel Aviv (TLV) on Friday night was delayed for more than an hour after four ultra-orthodox men refused to take their seats because they were next to women. Rotem wrote that the men would only speak to male flight attendants, who reportedly were trying to persuade them to take their seats but in the end, asked two women passengers to move to accommodate the men.

One of the male passengers in question was so strict in his beliefs that he kept his eyes closed during boarding and during the flight so as not to look at a woman, according to Rotem.

Now, one of the largest tech firms in Israel, NICE Systems, is boycotting El Al after the discriminatory move. NICE Systems CEO Barak Eilam wrote on LinkedIn that his 4,900 employees would not fly with the carrier until it fixed its “practice and actions discriminating [against] women.”

“At NICE we don’t do business with companies that discriminate against race, gender or religion,” Eilam’s post continued.

El Al on Monday took a firmer stance on the issue. The airline’s CEO Gonen Usishkin said in a statement that “any traveler who refuses to sit next to another traveler will be immediately removed from the flight.”

The Jerusalem Magistrates Court ruled almost exactly one year ago that El Al had to set up a different procedure in such instances that did not include moving women passengers after a woman in a similar situation on a 2015 flight sued the carrier.

If they cannot respect women equally, they should be banned from flying to/from the US. Same with any other airline that tries this BS.

Good, and now we can expect more companies to follow.

I wonder if the same thing could happen on a Arab carrier such as EgyptAir or Saudia?

Their religious beliefs are there own business. But they don’t have a right to impose them on others. If they are unable to sit next to women then they probably should consider chartering a private flight or not traveling. Their behavior was disruptive and they should have been ejected from the plane.

Don’t sit in your assigned seat? Don’t fly!

Verizon used NICE systems for data warehousing. In January of 2017, NICE hacked, exposing the personal information of 14 million Verizon customers. In June of 2017, a third party informed NICE an Verizon of the exposed data.

14 million customer names, cell numbers, and customer service PINs. You know, the information you’d need to move your number to a new cell phone.

In an age of multifactor SMS logon verification, this is very useful data. How many banks, creditors, or other entities send you SMS codes to access your online accounts?

Call airport security and find a woman cop to arrest them.

Make them buy two adjacent seats if they are worried about a woman sitting next to them. If that isn’t enough, they could wear some kind of clothing or headgear to keep them from seeing any woman sitting one seat over.

I've seen videos on youtube showing men refusing to sit next to woman and thus delaying flights.I saw one photo (don't know if it was photo shopped) showing an old Orthodox guy sitting with a clear plastic trash bag on him.

He wore it beause he knew he would be flying over a cemetary, and didn't want to be made unclean by doing so.

Yeah...I don't get it either.

As an Orthodox Jew, I understand the issue that these men have as a religious matter. However, they are adopting a personal standard that exceeds the actual religious requirements. There is no religious restriction on sitting next to a woman per se. What bothers me most is that, in the pursuit of some higher religious purpose, they end up committing one of the worse transgressions possible, which is to bring shame to the reputation of Jews. On another note, I’m really mystified that people can’t work out a couple of seat changes as a matter of courtesy. Almost everyone at some time or another asked another passenger if they’d mind switching seats for any number of reasons: so you could sit with a friend or relative, because you get air sick in certain seat positions, etc.

As a passenger, I would move if someone wanted to sit next to a friend or family member, but if a person wanted me to move seats because they refused to sit by a woman, a black, a white, a Hispanic, a Jew, a gay, or a Muslim, I would tell them ‘no way.’

What would happen if this were about muzzies? eh? on a muzzie airline the women would be on one side, and the bearded savages on the other.

I flew on Turkish Airlines just last year. There was no such segregation. Can't speak for airlines based in other Muslim countries, not having flown on them.

Hm. I would have to problem with them moving the lady next to me. You never know, she might be cute!
