Stalin was responsible for the deaths of at least 20 million of his own people completely unrelated to German atrocities or casualties of war. The fact that many Russians are now choosing to remember him differently is worrisome.
It is also worrisome and very ironic that in your defense of Stalin you ask the question, “Should Americans hold FDR liable for the loss in Pearl Harbor?”
Many historians along with numerous people who lived through the time period hold FDR's actions almost completely responsible for Pearl Harbor? There are a great many who believe that FDR baited the Japanese into attacking us so that he could finally get us into WWII despite his campaign promises and misleading public rhetoric.
FDR promised repeatedly that he hated war and would not allow the United States to get sucked into another European conflict. He was accused of lying at the time because there was a deep conflict between the promises he made during his reelection campaign and his actual actions. This duplicity was neatly done away with and forgotten because of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the furor that it caused.
There is no dispute that the Roosevelt administration withheld vital intelligence information from the military before the attack. This resulted in casualties and losses that were much worse than they might have been. After the attack a witch hunt was launched against our military commanders that destroyed the reputations and careers of many good men. The careers and reputations of men who were far more honorable than Roosevelt were sacrificed to hide his duplicity.
So Should Americans hold FDR liable for the loss in Pearl Harbor?. Yes, OBVIOUSLY YES!!!
What’s wrong with it?
The survey mentioned in the article was about world war II casualties, not about so called great purge.
And I don’t think average Americans will hold FDR liable for attack of Pearl Harbor.
Should we feel Worrisome?
