He was infected with malaria during the battle of Guadalcanal, and was not expected to live, but he told the nursing staff, “Missed me by that much!”

Get Smart was a favorite. Great chemistry with Agent 99 aka Barbara Feldon.

My dad was a marine who fought in Guadalcanal and Bougainville. Then got filariasis from some mosquito or bug and was shipped stateside where he recuperated enough by Wars end to be ready to hit the land battle of japan that ever happened because Truman dropped the bomb

He was born in 1923, not 1926. No way would he have been in the Marine Corps at age 15!

Don Adams nailed the part of Maxwell Smart. Along with
McHales Navy, Get Smart was my favorite comedy
show of the 60s. Hogan Heroes was up there in my
book along with a select few others.

Somehow they left out the fact that he was a Drill Instructor after his tour in Guadalcanal.
For what it is worth, his son was in my platoon at MCRD San Diego.

I have read that the off-camera hilarious antics of Adams and Rickles on the Get Smart set were some of the most legendary in Hollywood.

You would never guess from his offbeat TV persona that his real-life story would be so compelling.
