A strong earthquake hit the Japanese city of Osaka during morning rush hour Monday, killing at least four people and injuring 214, Japans government says.
The 5.3 magnitude quake shook Osaka, on Japans main Honshu Island, around 8 a.m. Monday local time (7 p.m. Sunday ET) according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The Japan Meteorology Agency put the magnitude at 5.9. It rated the quake at 6 Lower on its JMA Seismic Intensity scale, meaning the shaking would have been severe enough to make it difficult to remain standing.
And
Meantime, on the other side of the Pacific, a 5.6 magnitude quake struck near Guanagazapa in Guatemalas Escuintla province just after 8:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m ET) Sunday, according to the USGS.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage, according to CONRED, the government agency for disaster reduction.
Both Japan and Guatemala are situated on the Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.
BTW this is an epskirt !
Prayers for the families. Im beginning to wonder if all this activity is a result of the underground nuclear testing.
It’s a Ring of Fire thing.
Reported in real time on FR. Best wishes to our Japan FReepers.
That’s what Johnny Cash said.
5.3 shouldn’t kill people. It’s only starting to get serious at that level.
Perhaps it’s different than the normal type of earthquake they usually get in Japan, IIRC buildings are supposed to withstand a certain kind of quake, but not others.
Japan still says it was a 5.9 . Keep in mind it was only 6 miles deep . A wardrobe or some such cabinet fell on an 83 year old man . A 9 year old girl was killed at her school when a concrete wall near the school pool fell on her . Not sure about the other 2 . One of the most populated areas in Japan outside Tokyo . I was suprised there weren’t more deaths . Oh - I lived through 2 giant quakes - a 6.4 and a 7.3 within 28 hours two years ago here in Kumamoto . Not fun .
When you live on the Ring of Fire you get earth quakes.
