Tipping is a bad practice that need to die. It is now an expectation, rather than a privilege, to receive a tip, and the incentive to provide good service is lost. It is not fair to shake down people in such a manner, and the US would do well to abandon the entire scheme.

Go ahead and quit tipping and ill keep tipping far more than average and we will see who gets the best service

Personally i think tipping is the best way to encourage good service and frankly appreciate the priority seating and favorable treatment i get at our regular places

As one who makes a majority of my income through tips, I can assure you that tipping works. There is no way my co-workers or I would do this job for just minimum wage or even $15/hour. There are far easier ways to make money and I have missed plenty of my son’s football games and wrestling meets because there was no one else to work. If it were just another low paying job I’d quit to spend evenings and weekends with my family. I do enjoy our customers and often chat with regulars whether I’m their server or not. People have told us they like our restaurant because of the warm, friendly service we provide. Perhaps that’s less common than I realize, I don’t often go out because I’m working.

If you receive less than excellent service you are under no obligation to tip, regardless of the server’s expectations.
