A loyal Yorkshire terrier stayed with a missing 3-year-old girl in a dense cornfield in Missouri all night -- and heroically led a search party to them with a "weak bark," authorities said.
Remy Merritt and her dog, Fat Heath, had gone missing Thursday night in Qulin, triggering a desperate search that brought in some 150 volunteers, authorities said.
But it wasn't until Fat Heath responded to barks from one of the search dogs that rescuers ended the 12-hour ordeal and found Remy and her trusty companion.
"One of the dogs barked and a weaker bark was returned," Clark Parrott, a sergeant with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, told ABC News. "We came to find out it was [Remy] and her Yorkshire terrier Fat Heath ... down beneath the corn stalks.
"That dog stayed with her all night long," he said.
Remy had gone missing about 8:30 that night, authorities said.
That's when everyone in the small farm town chipped in to try to find her.

Good little dog, yes, but "heroically"? He didn't lead a search party to the little girl, he simply responded to another barking dog. What else do little dogs respond to? The neighbor dog, cats, squirrels, wild turkeys, birds, cars.....
I love animals dont care too much about reptiles though
Why can’t my wife’s Yorkie be like this? :(
The dog stayed with the toddler all night.
Heroic? Yes.
My sister had a Yorkie we nick named “killer”. The dog would tear to pieces mice, rats, snakes etc. It was truly a “rat dog”.
I’m wondering why my last girlfriend couldn’t be like that.
Which part -— the weak, or the bark? :D
Lost in a corn field? /j
She had a very weak bark.
And a pretty good temperment.
Even had me convinced she was loyal.
And then she wondered off.
Don't give me ideas. LOL!
Probably hoarse from doing what all little dogs seem to do: bark non stop till someone locks them in the bedroom...........LOL!
Maybe there really is something called ‘instinct’.
Nowadays, we may say some behavior is ‘hardwired’ into that person or animal. As with Border Collies when raised on a ranch. Some breeds just seem to know (without any formal training) that children or an injured person would need to be protected.
Either that, or the dog knew he was lost, and staying with the child was better than being fully alone.
Dogs would have to be invented if they weren’t already there for us.
I’m sure there are also stories of Heroic Cats too.
Cats can intimidate a foe just by their Kabuki Dance type of behavior when they want to. Sometimes I hear their shrieks during the night, when a pair of Tom Cats face off for the Battle Royale.
I have two Yorkies. Fat Heath is a dead ringer for one of my dogs.
Such a good pup! He deserves extra treats and pets for this..a true hero pup!
It is possible the terrier led the child into the field. But, if so, did stay and help.
Do dogs play “Marco Polo”?
Seems that they do.
The corpsman made em’ do it.
D*mn straight Fat Heath is a hero & has the greatest name ever!!!!!
