I enjoy subbing, but calling roll is not my favorite part. I only subbed in prek through 5th grades. Those children stare at you waiting for you to mess up a name so they can snicker and correct you when you mess up a tricky name. They were usually shocked when I got all the Hispanic names right. They would ask how I did it. Well, I lived in Tucson for years and learned some things. Then they wanted to know how I was able to pronounce some of the creative spelling names of certain ethnicities. Well, I’m from Mississippi. And sometimes the teacher would put the pronunciation next to the name on a special roll created for subs. It is always an adventure!
