the last ‘news’ article I saw was this:

I have seen speculation that Rich was the wikileaks source but no confirmation

There are two contradictory theories of the DNC Leak.
Tbe Blue Theory:
The Russians hacked the server, and provided the materials to Wikileaks to hurt Hillary and help Trump.
Belief in this is one of the key structural supports for the entire Russian narrative. It's important to the entire Trump-Russia narrative (and thus the attempted Deep State Coup.) that this narrative continues to be accepted.
The only proof offered is that a DNC aligned IT company, were hired by the DNC, and pronounced it "Russian" The company is called CrowdStrike.
The FBI did not independently examine the servers, because the DNC refused to turn them over, and the FBI (surprise!) didn't bother to subpoena them as evidence, like they would any other device in a major criminal case.
The FBI probably forfeited the ability for Mueller (or any other DOJ prosecutor) to ever charge anyone with the hacking, the PC Servers have long since lost any use due to the broken chain of evidence.
Mueller has not charged anyone with hacking. The Russians he's charged are charged with conspiring to put tasteless anti-Hillary memes on Facebook (and getting paid for it), which is against US Law, put probably not Russian law.
AND
The Red Theory:
That Seth Rich, DNC employee took the emails and provided them to Wikileaks out of anger at what he was reading, the cheating of Bernie mostly.
The Red Theory has a bit more and better evidence to support it.
Neither of these theories has been confirmed yet.
The obnoxious Left media will state, in their deepest authoritative voice that "The FBI has determined that the Russians hacked the DNC". Well, it's a theory but even the FBI haven't put any effort into it.
Why isn't Mueller indicting the KGB? I mean he's shown he will indict whoever is closest to the scene of the crime, even if there is no chance they will ever appear in a US Court. Why not another "show and tell" set of indictments like he did for the 13 Russians and 3 Russian companies?
I think the answer is he can't even write a good indictment around the "Russians hacked the DNC server", because his guys only have one crappy report from CrowdStrike.
So, they have quietly dropped it.
Presumably Julian Assange (and maybe Kim DotCom) could prove the Seth Rich theory, with emails and computer logs, but have chosen not to. Both are under severe legal distress of their own: Assange in the Equadorian embassy avoiding extradition and Dotcom fighting USA indictments from New Zealand.
Ill try and locate what I read regarding them trying to get Julians records. He is the only source I know of who stated that the files did not come from Russia, inferring it was Seth. Also recall him offering a reward.
As I saw somewhere else recently: the DNC server is the key... Is it about to surface? Q said the Dem leadership was about to be inconsequentialed.
