After Celebrity Deaths, Suicide Hotline Calls Jump 25%

As the world learned the news Friday that renowned chef and food writer Anthony Bourdain had died by apparent suicide, the same phone number flooded the internet.

The number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline—1-800-273-8255—was pinned to the bottom of memorial Instagram posts, shared in tweets and ran alongside news obituaries.

Whenever a notable person commits suicide, calls to the hotline spike, said Director John Draper. Just days before Mr. Bourdain’s death, news of another famous person had spread: handbag designer Kate Spade, whose apparent cause of death was also suicide. Calls jumped 25% in the two days after her death, compared with the same period the previous week, Mr. Draper said.

People often feel connected to celebrities, whether it be through something like a television program or a product they purchased. When a celebrity dies, Mr. Draper said, there can be a “collective sense of loss that many people feel.”

The increase in calls that hotlines experience isn’t necessarily a direct result of hearing about a celebrity suicide, said Alan Ross, executive director of Samaritans suicide prevention center in New York. In many cases, individuals are already struggling with mental health and the news of a death prompts them to seek help.

“The random number of things that can stimulate people who are already likely to get worse is so varied,” he said. “When there is promotion and marketing and in some ways acceptance, yeah, it does drive people to reach out.”

The national hotline is a network of crisis centers that provide over-the-phone counseling to individuals who might be contemplating suicide. Calls to the national lifeline are directed to centers near the caller where they can talk to trained counselors. The lifeline has a network of more than 150 local crisis centers.

They looked at you odd because they were questioning themselves where their indoctrination went wrong with you. A girl and I always got a lot of odd looks. We were rebels I guess.

I agree.

My brother, a recently converted Catholic, has spent his life amassing money. I always told him money was an artificial construct, it’s starting to dawn on him that money isn’t everything.

One could fathom seeking suicide if living in constant, unrelenting physical chronic pain but zero excuses for rich, healthy celebrity’s experiencing a little temporary emotional pain. No God = no hope: a recipe for leftist losers no matter fame and wealth.

A friend said to me “Suicide isn’t the answer”.

I responded “It can be”

Confused, he asked “When?”

I asked “What is it called when you kill yourself?”........

Our prayers for those seeking suicide is not that they end their lives but rather end the unbelief and rejection of God. The Lord gives abundant life to those who seek and embrace Him.

Some of the calls are in support of celebrity suicides.

God gave these misguided people free will, how they use that will is their choice.

As someone who was clinically dead (for a few seconds anyway) and has nearly died twice, I know that life is a precious gift. It's not something to be given up for trivial reasons. I fought too hard to have anyone besides God take it from me.

I understand that mental illness overtakes some in a massive wave that overtakes their emotional faculties. I can also accept the idea of killing yourself in battle if you know that you could betray your comrades while under torture.

However, suicide is usually the permanent solution to a temporary problem at best. At worst (especially if you believe in the God of the Bible), suicide is only the beginning of your problems.

I agree. Suicide (unless it's by somebody who is severely out of touch with reality, as in, a hallucinating schizophrenic who doesn't know what he's doing) --- is a horribly selfish and aggressive act.

Emotionally, it injects a potent dose of lasting bitterness, pain and madness into everybody who ever loved you or cared for you or needed you. Spiritually, if fully intentional, it merits hell.

These suicides who abandon their dependent children are doing something really despicable.

Nevertheless, I pray: Lord, have mercy.

I NEVER heard of the guy and the media is all afire with the news of this *tragedy*.

Well, I know someone who recently committed suicide and not a peep out of the papers at all about it.

It’s not more tragic because it happens to someone popular or allegedly well known.
