As news of Bourdains apparent suicide at 61 sent shockwaves across the Internet on Friday morning, many reflected on his early years a time when Bourdain didnt know if he was going to be a chef, let alone a household name, author, and culinary inspiration and his close ties to Massachusetts.
He left Cape Cod with restaurant experience and a suntan, and then headed off to culinary school and later, New York. But he also left with something else: An ever-deepening relationship with recreational drugs.
Throughout the episode, Bourdain switches between his culinary explorations and highlighting the heroin epidemic in Massachusetts. He visits Greenfield, in the western part of the state, to speak with a former-dealer-turned-informant, and with police officers who are on the front lines of the ever-worsening drug problem.
After examining how the heroin epidemic started, Bourdain begins to weave a narrative that shines a light on both hidden food gems in Western Mass. an old-timey bowling alley and a diner specializing in boiled dinner, for example and residents who have grappled with addiction.
By the end of the episode, Bourdain, sitting in a room with others in recovery, candidly reflects on how he finally confronted his own demons. According to an interview with Biography.com in 2016, Bourdain stopped using heroin in the 1980s.
I looked in a mirror and I saw somebody worth saving, or that I wanted to at least try real hard and save, he said. I look back on that, and I think about what Ill tell my daughter. You know, that was daddy, aint no doubt about it. But I hope that Ill be able to say that was daddy then, this is daddy now that Im alive, and living, and hope.

Please stop disgracing this forum by posting about this yellow coward who did the ultimate run out and bail out on his little 11 year old daughter who, even if she lives to be 110, will feel this abandonment and pain the rest of her life.
How many unknown citizens and nobodies will kill themselves this week after hearing and being influenced by his gutless choice? Their deaths will go unnoticed. Eff him!
I did not know who this fellow was. I read a couple of articles to find out more about him, and he sounds like a troubled person, not a happy person.
Was this an overdose death?
It is important for our society to discuss addiction and depression. We need to help others find ways to both prevent and heal from addiction. And we need to keep moving toward prevention and cure for most depression.
For that latter, changing the gut bacteria population is having sensational effects on healing / curing some mental illness, including psychosis. Living in symbiosis with our bacteria actually can change our brain functioning and we are just at the beginning of this knowledge.
The left wing’s choice of heroes amazes me. I barely knew who this person was but if you go on to Yahoo News almost every other story is about this loser.
No. He hung himself.
22 veterans a day commit suicide, nobody bats an eye. A celebrity commits suicide and everyone loses their minds.

September 16, 2017
“Anthony Bourdain, the host of Parts Unknown on liberal CNN, said last week that he would poison Donald Trump if the celebrity chef was asked to cater a peace summit between the President and Kim Jong Un. Hemlock, Bourdain simply replied when asked by TMZ what he would serve Trump and the North Korean dictator.

There has been far too much adulation and lamentations about this man. It must be understood that this man voluntarily and habitually introduced alien chemicals into his body that alter brain biochemistry and ultimately affect and behavior. One of the consequences of prolonged drug use is a higher death rate from all causes and a marked increase in suicide.
when I saw him make so much of the recent Seattle episode about the local pot shops, I thought he was in for a relapse.
great point!
Not suicide. Just Redrum
Yes. This is important work and knowledge.. Thanks for the reminder about gut bacteria as well.
“Here’s Johnny!”
Ah. Thanks, it wasn’t apparent to me.
Yes. They get littel recognition.
Not to downplay that...here’s an interesting article about the “22 vets a day” stat.
His troubles are very common for those who seek the approval of others through a popularity contest in the media. As Billy Joel speaks in his song... put in the back of a discount rack like an old magazine...
It is an up and down roller coaster of being on top and then falling. For a former heroin addict, he was missing his high.
I tend to agree with you....he was never on some path of feeling happy about where he was in life. I don’t think he was stressed out....just that he continually searched for something to anchor himself and to feel attached. He never found it.
There can be various successful people in life who seem to have had lucky breaks...gained status....achieved something that the rest of us would desire. And behind it...dark turmoil because they can’t recognize this for what it is.

To assist in understanding this, look at the suicide rate in the military which doubled in 2008/2009 after Obama became president and implemented anti military policies.
Much of it is frustration.
