My Dad (USMC WWII, Korea, Vietnam) told a story of when he was stationed in China shortly after WWII, guarding a coal mine while Chiang Kai-shek's and Mao Tse-tung's troops were fighting for control of the area.

He drives up to the gate in a jeep and the guard looks at him with his eyes as wide as saucers. Dad looks at him and asks why the look? The guard stammers "Sarge, you just drove through TWO lanes of machine-gun fire!!!"

The Chinese were in a pitched battle fighting each other across the road. Both sides saw his jeep with the big American Flag and held fire until he passed!
