A person would be prudent to assume that in SE Texas, the south half of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, far south and coastal Georgia, and all of Florida that there is a gator in every pond, marsh, swamp, ditch, canal, lake, bayou, creek and stream. Use caution accordingly. Heck, look in the swimming pool before you hop in.

I've only had a handful of gator encounters. Twice in SE Texas and three times in Louisiana. To a gator, everything is food, not a predator - It's how they are wired.

One time in Texas outside of Port Arthur, my work had me using a 14ft jonboat to cross a wide bayou for a land inspection. When returning to the boat one of the other guys noticed a “log” alongside the length of the boat. We picked up some large chunks of wood and tossed them into the water. The log was a gator stalking us for our return into the boat. After a few pieces of wood bounced off the gator it swam off then we hopped into boat to head out.
