The fossil record is a record of sudden death not of a slow evolution.

Really. In the Cambrian, there are only very primitive fish. No amphibians. No reptiles. No birds. And no mammals. No land plants, either. Those all appear at staggered intervals in the geologic fossil record later than the Cambrian.

This link explains, better than I can, a different paradigm than the one most held to be true that the fossil record indicates formation that took millions of years to occur.
