San Francisco is one of the most exciting, dynamic, and richest cities in the world.
But it's far from being the cleanest.
In February, the NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit spent three days surveying 153 blocks of downtown San Francisco to see what they would find. Their search turned up drug needles, garbage, and feces in concentrations comparable to some of the world's poorest slums.
On a recent commute to Business Insider's office in San Francisco, I took a detour through the Tenderloin neighborhood, where NBC conducted its survey, to see how the claim held up.

Dont forget the human feces. Its a badge of honor there to just drop trow and crap where they please.
Everything liberals touch. Everything.
The Tenderloin has always been like that. Why would the author go to the Tenderloin? What matters is all the “nice” districts in the city — are they equally bad?
I got lost in downtown SF in 2014. Couldn’t have been lost in a nicer-looking place. Unfortunately, what its leaders are doing to the place is atrocious.
Saw 2 or 3 wacky LGBT types walking about, too, and the city is apparently full of them. Lots of cyclists at the Golden Gate Bridge area, too.
More like left your dinner.
How nuanced!
I don’t get the squalor. My grandparents came to the US in the early ‘20’s and they were certainly poor.
But they were clean and tidy. I’ve seen old photos of the house and garden. Not new or fancy, but clean and well kept.
Poverty and squalor do not need to be related.
I remember in 2005, I went there for a conference and was staying in this average hotel.
Thank goodness it was just one night. There were flees everywhere.
I asked the front desk about this. They said, “Oh this is San Francisco, flees are everywhere!”
The late Tom Wolfe described San Francisco as "slums with a view."
Poo poo
Pee pee
Parking tickets
Tee hee hee hee
Fleas everywhere? Wasn’t there a plague or two associated with fleas? snicker.
Ok. Let's think about those two statements, class. Any contradictions here?
Frisco’s where it’s at, baby!
