Really, how do we know how much “effort” either
is putting in aside from their perceived ideas?

That is a good point. However, we used to have data to go by. According to the tests, women on average scored higher on verbal skills and men excelled in the spatial/mathematical area.
In a post modern world no doubt ways have been devised to hide these differences. But the data is still there, regardless.
