I believe the plan shortly after it aired was to find a reason to get rid of her. Roseann is fairly unstable so coming up with a reason was easy. with Roseann off of the show ABC gains creative CONTROL something they did not have before.
If so then they would have used this opportunity to fire Roseanne rather than cancelling the show.
