Sounds very third world. I’m not happy with how our trials are insanely lengthy but that does take the cake for a country like Great Britain.
I read a great book on the true story of Captain Kidd. Hanged as a pirate, but was really a Privateer authorized by the King. (The King let him hang due to political expediency - same as today.) Kidd too was appointed a Gov’t lawyer that didn’t do anything. I’m not sure if the laws have changed in England since the 1700’s, but back then it was guilty until proven innocent.
