Oh, boo-hoo-hoo! I’m twenty minutes from Princeton and shop there every other day. It is the most liberal, wealthy, laid-back community you can imagine. It IS lily white but a kind of lily white that would just love to give a black girl an “A” in class and take her home for dinner.

She was a slacker like her husband who got where she got through AA and being in the right place at the right time.

I was black and from a working-class neighborhood in Chicago, while Princeton’s student body was generally white and well-to-do. My advice to students is to be brave and stay with it.

I’d never stood out in a crowd or a classroom because of the color of my skin before. But I found close friends and a mentor who gave me the confidence to be myself.
