A principal at a New Jersey high school has apologized for prom tickets that contained a line urging students to "party like it's 1776."
In a letter posted to Twitter Friday, Cherry Hill East High School Principal Dennis Perry said he was "writing to apologize for the hurt feeling this reference caused for members of our school family."
"It was insensitive and irresponsible not to appreciate that not all communities can celebrate what like was like in 1776," Perry wrote. "I especially apologize to our African American students whom I have let down by not initially recognizing the inappropriateness of this wording."
Perry said the school will be reprinting redesigned commemorative prom tickets that will be distributed at the dance and that in the future, "safe guards will be added to ensure that a diverse group of people view all information before it is distributed to the school."
The prom is planned for the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
According to The Courier Post, black students represent 6.2 percent of East's student body, compared to 62.2. percent for whites and 22.4 percent for Asians. Slightly less than 6 percent of students are Hispanic.
There were plenty of free blacks in the American colonies.
Looking at the demographics, it seems like a low crime area.
I hate to ask, but why is anyone, including black students, going to he offended by the year 1776???
That idiot of a Principal has no clue about what transpired in 1776. It certainly wasn’t time to party.

More liberal BS. Every American who is glad to be an American can celebrate like it’s 1776, including African Americans. Nobody is required to stay in the United States.

This weekend, the church announced it was pulling down a memorial plaque to its onetime vestryman and the country’s first president, saying he and another famous parishioner, Robert E. Lee, have become so controversial that they are chasing away would-be parishioners.
While acknowledging “friction” over the decision, the church’s leadership said both plaques, which are attached to the front wall on either side of the altar, are relics of another era and have no business in a church that proclaims its motto as “All are welcome — no exceptions.”
“The plaques in our sanctuary make some in our presence feel unsafe or unwelcome. Some visitors and guests who worship with us choose not to return because they receive an unintended message from the prominent presence of the plaques,” the church leaders said in a letter to the congregation that went out last week.
So becoming America wasn’t good for African Americans, what because they would rather be African Britains?
