In the west, besides being symbolic of wisdom, owls have been considered to be creatures of ill omen since at least Roman times.
Most owls are nocturnal hunters and can see well in the dark. Also, their feathers grow in a way which makes their flight practically silent so their prey has no warning before being taken.
Owls also have no sense of smell, so they are one of the few creatures that will prey on skunks.
