Actually, as was pointed out by a Syrian friend of mine, Assad is an Alawite which is ostensibly a flavor of Shia Islam but it bears more resemblance to a Christianity evolved from being driven underground in the 8th/9th century.

And if I've read the articles about Alawite..they are somewhat secret about their beliefs and talking about them? Perhaps they aren't a majority.? YOU probably know 100% more than me on the subject. I was scan reading.
