If the officer had given POTUS some kind of memorial coin, it seems as though it would have been given more officially or ceremonially.

Perhaps it was something like this.

The officer said he gave him this coin (pic at link):

During an impromptu exchange away from the microphone, Familia’s surviving partner Vincent Maher presented the president with a challenge coin.

That coin, which was created by the precinct to raise money for the family of the fallen officer, held special meaning for Maher.

“I’ve carried the coin with me every day since I got it, and while I was up there I just had some sort of a compelled feeling to take it out of my pocket and present the president with it.”

One side of the coin showed Familia’s photo.
The other showed her badge number (7370), her precinct (46th), and the Latin inscription “fidelis ad mortem
That inscription translates to “faithful, unto death.”
