At 38, Erika is dying.
Her battle to live began almost as soon as her daughter, Loïe, was born four years ago, when Erika was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic colon cancer that had spread to her liver... Weeks passed until the company reached a decision. Despite her plea, the answer was the same: Denied...
The opinion of the experienced Cleveland Clinic multidisciplinary liver transplant committee (is) that liver transplantation would prolong this young patients life substantially, and that there is NO other treatment alternative that could match this outcome at this point in time....
It was their UHC rep on the phone. This time, he had good news: The insurer would cover Erikas transplant.

200K, thumbs down, then up.
"There are eight million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them."
Cleveland Clinic is one of the finest hospitals in the world. If it was a “lesser” hospital the answer may well have remained “no”.
That’s really, really young for colon cancer. Most folks don’t even screen until 50; later if there is no family history.
This is United Health Cares approach. Seen it so many times on the net.
Totaly surprised this was about $200,000?
In 2012 after I retired, an evil automobile ran over my bicycle and me. The claim is that it was my fault and my insurance paid for everything. The total was pushing 500K.
Good thing I still had my company gold-plated insurance.
Otherwise, they would have set me out on the ice floe.
I will pray for this lady.
Dear God, please move hearts and minds.
She needs a chance. She should do a GoFundMe and raise the cash herself if need be. I don’t have much, but I’d sure ship in.
Dear Lord, I ask a miracle for this young mother.
Between fixing the lies that were asserted at UHC, and the fact that this gal ought to be due something significant in compensation for the liver tumor ablation bungle (so that UHC would be in line via subrogation to get its investment back), it looks like the devil has been all over this case.
It looks like UHC has been paying ignoramuses for “creative ways to say no” rather than competent doctors to sort through cases by their honest merit.
Terrible story. You think if the hospital group put a whole in her liver that she would have a case to sue them and thus get the transplant.
Then again, having just survived stage 4 colon cancer is probably the main reason why she was denied. I’ve never heard of anybody lasting much longer after stage 4 — Heck, stage 3 is tough as it is.
I had a friend who had stage 1 colon cancer, got it taken care of then 6 years later it popped back up. This was Dec 23. He was dead by January 20th.
I’m sure a suit is in formation, but that doesn’t get emergency treatment.
“It looks like UHC has been paying ignoramuses for creative ways to say no rather than competent doctors to sort through cases by their honest merit.”
Had she received instant approval, still only a slight chance of the required planetary alignment of eligibility and matching doner. Plus her remaining healthy enough to receive.
They didn’t even grant her the dignity of claiming that. They issued a pack of lies. They’re now eating it.
And anyhow, if she odds-on would not have been in position to complete the procedure, what would it have hurt to tell the truth and grant it in principle. If it never happened, UHC would be out nothing for it.
If she were an illegal or in prison, the bills would be paid, wanna bet?
If she was dealing with single payer, they would have told her she was better off with "a pain pill", and that would be that ...
I had a friend die Friday because she couldnt get a liver in time to save her life. She was at the top of the list as they say. Its a long list & and too few livers. Not everyone makes it. Very sad for the young mother.
I can’t resist mentioning that it is illegal to sell organs, or even parts of organs. Note that it is possible to cut out a part of a liver and use that for transplant - someone doesn’t need to die for their liver to be useful. However, the free market for livers is banned, and, surprise surprise, there is a shortage. Because it’s not worth most people’s effort to donate.
Egg donors, blood donors even sperm donors get paid.
Welcome to the age of pembrolizumab (keytruda).
I am a hem-ectomy liver donor to my brother.
Please just sign that release when you get a new drivers license. The release is for organ donation. Many men and women die every day for lack of those organs that are buried.
Please just singe the the form so those ill may live
Prayers for her.
