It has been done. Not saying SCOTUS would interfere if the people allowed an ineligible person to run, and Congress endorsed (e.g., at least dual citizen Obama). But in the global scheme, courts in the US have reversed election outcomes.

The more important or bigger the stakes, the less likely the court is to do the right thing.
